You're not "sawing" at the stick like you would normally as the extended range allows you to be more precise with your movement.
The one place you do feel a better sense of control on however are circuits with slight turns, like on ovals. You don't necessarily gain any competitive advantage with these, but they do help a lot in the comfort department if you're racing for hours on end. I've been using the Speed Freek Apex add-ons ever since Forza Motorsport 4 and they make most driving games feel better on a controller.
